Leslie Melton Jennings - 2010
Born in Wilmington, N.C. on July 9, 1983 to Phyllis and Dennis Melton, Leslie and sister Julie enjoyed dancing, beach music, and R & B oldies. Leslie at age 8, and Julie, age 12, began taking shag lessons at Chantilly’s Beach Club with Fran Reed and Roger Johnson. Thanks to Alan Stokes, Leslie competed in her first Junior contest in 1993 at J.B. Pivots in Charleston, S.C. She went on to form partnerships with Josh Smith, Jonathan Jackson, Norman Aldredge, Grayson Smith, Grant Garmon, and William Greene. She holds 3 Junior National titles, 6 Junior Grand National titles, and the 1998 Junior Swing Division U.S. Open title. She has served on the National Shag Championship Dance Team for 10 years and with partner Sam West, won the 2010 Professional and “Overall” National Championships. Leslie and her husband, Chris Jennings of the “Fantastic Shakers” were married at the OD Resort in September of 2009 during SOS Fall Migration and currently reside in Efland, N.C. with their daughter Autumn. Leslie is most thankful for her family’s support, her friends, partners, her extended “shagging” family, the rich history that Chicken Hicks and the rest of the Hall of Famers have provided and the next generation of shaggers destined to keep this dance alive!
