Kenneth Brent Key - 2010
Born in Thomasville, N.C. on March 26, 1976, Brent was introduced to the Shag at age 13 by his parents at the Juke Box in High Point, N.C. where he took group lessons from Debbi Rickard, found his first partner, Kristal Taylor, and won his first contest. Influenced and taught by Mac and Janice Helms, Susie Beaver and Patrick Gibson, Sy Creed and Dana Brown, and Gordon Madox; Brent became an accomplished Junior Shagger winning contests with Alicia Burdick, Shea Carver and Jennifer Beaver. He was also a member of the 1999 U.S. Open Champion Shag team, “Duck’s Dirty Dozen”. Introduced to the West Coast Swing in the mid 90’s, he met his wife and dance partner Kellese. Brent’s shagging background brought a new dimension to his dancing as he incorporated the Shag’s fancy footwork into the Swing and won the 1998 Grand Nationals and the 1998, 2000, and 2003 U.S. Open. Brent and Kellese now live in Frisco, Texas with their two sons, Chase and Tag. Although they continue to teach and compete all over the world, Brent still loves the Shag, all of his shagging friends and gives special thanks to his parents for all of their sacrifices for his dancing career.
